Project Highlight: Incentive-based marine conservation in SouthWest Aceh
IBSF have worked in Southwest Aceh since 2023. The official start of the incentive program was in August 2024, and 20 participants from two locations, Lhok Pawoh and Lama Muda, participated.
The project aims to pilot an incentive approach for small-scale fishers who conduct daily fishing within the MPA fishing zone and the adjacent area. Before kicking off the program, we engaged the community with a social survey to ensure our incentives aligned perfectly with their local needs.

Recognising that every location is unique, we developed distinct strategies for each area. Our research revealed that the incentive payment approach resonated most with the small-scale fishers.

To help everyone understand this payment scheme, we hosted a workshop that fostered open dialogue and collaboration with the community. Together, we identified the fish species and payment structure that would best support their livelihoods while promoting the conservation of sharks and rays. During the workshop, we also trained the fishers in how to safely release sharks and rays, and provided them with cameras to document these releases as part of our pay-to-release incentive program.

The program has been ongoing since then, and fishers are willing to continue the program if further opportunities arise. As we look forward to expanding this pilot, we are seeking additional support to enhance its sustainability and long-term impact. Together, we can foster both economic well-being and marine conservation
