Initial Social Survey in Ujong Serangga Southwest Aceh
The Impact Blue Sea Foundation (IBSF) is conducting a community-based conservation project to protect sharks and rays in Southwest Aceh, Indonesia. The project, which is supported by the University of Oxford and IPB University , aims to collect data on shark and ray landing, fisheries, and biology, and to develop an incentive program for the local fishers.
As part of the project, the IBSF team conducted an initial social survey in Ujong Serangga Southwest Aceh, where they met with stakeholder representatives to gather basic information on shark and ray fisheries in the area. The team also learned about the stakeholders’ needs, the actual conditions in the field, and the opportunities for improvement.
The initial social survey was a crucial step to establish trust and collaboration with the local community. The IBSF team plans to conduct a comprehensive information gathering in the next few months, which will include some questions to help them design their incentive program. The incentive program will aim to encourage sustainable fishing practices and reduce shark and ray bycatch in Southwest Aceh.
